Summary: Maybe a prequel to All He Could Do. Maybe just a tiny snippet of Post-NFA angst.



Connor had nightmares.

Every night Angel was jolted out of sleep by a long low wail from his son. He'd get up, and go into Connor's room, but Spike was always already there. Angel would stand in the doorway and watch Spike fuss.

Spike would wake Connor with light touches to the face and a murmered "there now, you're alright yeah?" He would gentle the boy to one side of the bed and crawl in beside him. He'd rub Connor's back, stroke his hair, and talk in a soft low voice. On the nights when things were worst he'd draw Connor to him and Angel would watch their bodies twine together and a piece of him would ache a little. He'd watch Spike rock Connor and remember nights when he'd rocked Connor as a baby. And he'd remember seeing Spike rock Dru and wonder why Spike always seemed to be the one trying to mend the children Angel had broken.
